Two hundred Children’s Surgery International supporters were in a party mood on April 30th when they enjoyed Passport to Smiles, a benefit for the medical missions of CSI. Many of them had never been to the Mill City Museum, the site of the event, and enjoyed a tour of the hands-on museum on the Mississippi River.
Co-Chairs Mary Lufkin Batinich and Karen Ferrara were extremely pleased with the results of the event, which far exceeded their expectations. Their active committee presented a splendid evening complete with a delicious dinner, music by the Choristers of the Bel Canto Voices and pianists Sandy Atlas and Janice Kimes. A successful Silent Auction, chaired by Lora Koppel, was followed by a live auction with radio personality Barbara Carlson.
A pre-dinner Patron’s Reception was hosted next door to the museum at the home of Barbara Forster and Larry Hendrickson and was attended by representatives of the three countries where CSI medical missions are currently conducted-Ghana, Mexico and Peru. Guest dinner speaker was Hennepin County Attorney Amy Klobuchar, who spoke of the importance of volunteerism at the local and international level.
One of the highlights of the evening was a Power Point presentation by CSI Board Chair Mike Fairbourne, assisted by Ricardo Ortizcazarin, the owner of the Cazarin Web Group and donor of CSI’s new, state-of-the-art web site. Many of the guests had never seen pictures or heard of the work of Children’s Surgery International and were truly educated and moved by Mike’s eloquent presentation. It’s safe to say that a good time was had by all.
